Goldenrod Tincture (1/2 oz)

Topical preparations of Goldenrod (Solidago Canadensis) have been used for centuries by traditional practitioners to treat inflammation of the mouth and throat as well as the discomfort of slow-healing wounds. The name solidago means "to make whole." Today, Goldenrod is primarily used as an aquaretic agent, meaning that it promotes the loss of water from the body (as compared to a diuretic, which promotes the loss of both water and electrolytes such as salt).

Appearance

Goldenrod is a perennial often found along roadsides and in open fields with single woody stems that grow to heights of three to seven feet. Its yellow flowers, which generally appear in August and September, are small but come in large clusters. Leaves alternate between toothed and smooth edges.
Goldenrod does not cause hay fever. It has been wrongly accused for the pollen problems created by ragweed and the grasses. Goldenrod has brightly colored flowers designed to attract color-sensitive insects. Its pollen grains are relatively large, heavier than air, because they are designed to be carried off by flies, bees, butterflies, even ants or birds, but not by the wind.

History

The Chippewas used Goldenrod for sores in the mouth, for lung trouble and for difficult labor. Other Native Americans used a solution from boiled Goldenrod leaves as an external lotion for wounds and ulcers. It was also used to heal the saddle sores of horses. The Spanish Invaders used the fresh plant mixed with soap for a plaster to treat sore throats. After the Boston Tea Party, when tea was boycotted in the colonies, a pleasant and relaxing "Liberty Tea" was developed which included Sweet Goldenrod as a principal ingredient.

Goldenrod also figures prominently in American folklore. If you would like to see your future love, wear a sprig of Goldenrod. He or she will appear by the next day.
